Legal Director


The Intergovernmental Risk Management Agency (IRMA) invites your interest in the position of Director of Legal Services. IRMA is a highly respected joint municipal risk pool consisting of 73 Northeastern Illinois public entities that provides high-quality risk management services to its members, including customized public entity coverage that is one of the most comprehensive programs available; long-term stability in pricing and membership; flexible deductibles and an exceptional in-house claims department. The Director of Legal Services is responsible for overseeing IRMA's self-insured coverage documents, including making any necessary revisions, providing coverage opinions, drafting Reservation of Rights Letters and coverage denials, administers IRMA's litigation management policy and procedures, identifies conflicts, coordinates and facilities IRMA member appeals pursuant to the IRMA Bylaws, oversees the commercial reinsurance and excess insurance procurement and renewals, reviews member contracts for strong contractual risk transfer language, oversees the provision of certificates of coverage, participates in litigation strategy, provides assistance to staff as necessary, reviews subpoenas and responses to subpoenas, is the staff liaison for the Police Chief Steering Committee and the Coverage, Claims and Litigation Committee and provides support to the IT Committee. This position also ensures timely reporting to reinsurer/excess insurance, attends Committee and Board meetings, and works with the leadership team to continue to move the organization forward.

Candidates must possess a juris doctor and have expert insurance coverage technical knowledge, in depth knowledge of applicable coverage law, superior customer service, analytical, negotiation, decision making and problem-solving skills. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency with claims software and Microsoft Office 365. Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years' experience in insurance coverage analysis. Competitive benefits include a pension plan through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, health and life insurance, a generous time off schedule, and a hiring salary range of $165,000-$210,000, depending on qualifications.
