Assistant Editor



Currently, all employees are working remotely and we have decided to postpone our hybrid return to the office plan indefinitely.
We will provide an advance notice to all employees once we determine a new target date for our return to the office.
Position Summary:

The assistant editor will handle daily news copy editing, headline writing and social media for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, along with other tasks as required. Meticulous editing skill is a must; will handle complex material daily and on deadline, including reported pieces about Illinois law and the Chicago legal community, contributed columns from legal experts, and legal case summaries and studies. Experience in legal editing is not required; editor will learn and ultimately ensure that copy maintains high-level, smart content in a way that is also readable and lively. Will ensure consistency and best practices across newspaper production, newsletters and digital and social media. Editor will handle similar tasks for Chicago Lawyer magazine during its production cycle, currently six issues per year.

Essential Functions: Add the main tasks a person in this position would be doing on a regular basis, beginning with the most important job function. Make sure that the essential job functions that are detailed in the job description accurately reflect the actual requirements and functions of the job and standards of performance. An important cornerstone is identifying the routine aspects of the job that should be subject to standards of performance. Standards of performance are descriptions of output conditions that exist when a job is being performed acceptably. To the extent possible, standards of performance should be established in both quantitative and qualitative form.

Regular attendance

Edit articles for magazine and newspaper, including writing strong print and digital headlines; checking for factual, grammatical and style mistakes; and trimming stories as needed.

Demonstrate strong news judgment for issues of interest to local legal community

Stay up to date and perform best practices in digital journalism presentation

Proofread pages for newspaper and magazine.

Assist newspaper and magazine editors as needed in gathering or assembling information and digital editor in website management

Other duties as assigned to meet business needs

Position Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field.

Experience: Five years plus of journalism experience required. Expertise in legal or business journalism a plus. Should have experience working with editorial content management systems.

Core Competencies (underlying skills, abilities, knowledge, experience, technologies or processes essential for position)

Knowledge of journalistic tenets and Associated Press style

Strong organizational skills

Ability to work collaboratively and under deadline pressure

Strong communication skills
