Legislative Attorney (In-House)

Reports to: General Counsel and Vice President of Legal Services
The Illinois REALTORS' legal department, led by its General Counsel, performs various functions for the association, including advising and assisting the governmental affairs department on legislative and regulatory issues, which impact the association or its members. The Legislative Attorney will play an important role in assisting the General Counsel in these and other functions of the legal department. The Legislative Attorney will be relied upon to critically analyze legislation, think creatively in the drafting and editing of bills and regulations, and negotiate and defend the association's positions on key legislative initiatives. Key duties of the Legislative Attorney include assisting Illinois REALTORS'

governmental affairs team on legislative and regulatory matters, and assistance with litigation, if any, involving the association and management of some legal filings.


Assist Illinois REALTORS' General Counsel in advising the Illinois REALTORS'

governmental affairs team on legislative matters.

Assist Illinois REALTORS' General Counsel and governmental affairs team in reviewing pending or filed legislation, editing and drafting of legislation which promotes private property rights or the rights of members, negotiating on behalf of the association on legislative matters, and proposing changes to filed legislation of concern to association.

Research and analyze public policy issues related to the interests and ideals of the association and its members.

Assist Illinois REALTORS' General Counsel in advising Illinois REALTORS' governmental affairs team on local and state regulatory matters, including negotiations with regulators and other interested parties on the drafting and interpretation of state and local regulations.

Assist Illinois REALTORS' General Counsel in advising Illinois REALTORS'

governmental affairs team on political matters in relation to ongoing legislative issues.

Work as key member of Illinois REALTORS' legal department, under direction of the General Counsel, provide in-house legal services to the association and assist in managing the provision of such services by an internal team and, when necessary, outside counsel.

Assist Illinois REALTORS' General Counsel in directing responses to and making recommendations on all matters that could result in certain legal action involving the association.

Assist Illinois REALTORS' General Counsel on the oversight of and the association's involvement with amicus briefs drafted on behalf of the association, its members or affiliates in cases on the state and federal level.

Be a strong and professional representative of the association at member events, communicate with members in writing and in person on ongoing legislative issues when needed.


Three (3) or more years of progressive legal experience required.

Experience in legislative and regulatory drafting required.

Experience in legislative negotiations or advocacy preferred.

Knowledge of state legislative and executive branch processes and procedures.

Ability to advocate on behalf of the association to members of all political parties.

Flexibility and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment under short deadlines.

A strong academic background with a J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Illinois.

People and project management ability required, with an understanding of the unique issues of a volunteer-driven organization preferred.

Strong communicator with excellent writing skills, a congenial team player with excellent diplomatic and persuasive skills.

Ability to handle and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Strong computer literacy on Office products required.
