Paralegal/ Administrative Assistant

Paralegal/administrative assistant for a small law firm in a nice location and building in downtown Chicago near Michigan Avenue. We offer a positive and collegial working environment and the opportunity to learn interesting things while helping people in need. Our firm concentrates primarily in two practice areas:

1) Defending clients accused of online copyright infringement claims in federal court.
2) Drone law (commercial unmanned aircraft systems).

While the practice workload varies, currently most of the day to day work involves clients with online copyright infringement claims. We have an excellent national reputation in both of these practice areas and our clients are literally from Hawaii to New York.

Most clients are accused of downloading "free" movies using BitTorrent software or illegal streaming sites or apps like PopcornTime. Sometimes we find it was the parent's children who did the downloads, and often times nobody knows who did it. Clients tend to be grateful for our assistance which is a nice benefit to our practice area. Initially when they first contact us they may be confused and/or have anxiety about the accusation against them. Your job and ours is to provide competent information to them in order to allow them to make rational decisions about their legal choices on how to deal with it.

A large portion of time will be spent speaking on the telephone to both clients and prospective clients who were recently served with a summons, or they received an ISP letter informing them a subpoena was received to reveal their identity in relation to the movie download lawsuit, aka federal copyright infringement lawsuit. This will often involve providing the prospective client with legal options as well as the risks and benefits of each option.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Telephone intake including prospective clients
Keeping accurate track of the status of client matters
Assist in PACER research for new cases and case developments
Assist in creating blog articles under attorney supervision for new case updates
Assisting attorneys in communicating with clients and opposing counsel

Feedback and constructive critique from the attorneys is an expected occurrence and learning opportunity.
